Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – International singer Rihanna is accused of insulting and ignoring cultural and religious feelings after posting a topless photo of herself wearing the necklace of the Hindu god “Ganesha “.
Rihanna posted her photo to her Twitter and Instagram accounts on Tuesday and appeared wearing boxer shorts from her underwear brand “Savage X Fenty”.
The global singer wore purple jewelry, as well as a necklace that appears to be encrusted with diamonds of an elephant-headed deity. In doing so, Rihanna has been called “disrespectful” by some Hindus and social media users.
Various comments poured in on the image of the international singer, one of which wrote: “Can we stop sexualizing people’s religion for the sake of influence … I just don’t understand the purpose of having the Ganesha necklace in the underwear campaign. “
Another wrote: “Our culture is not like you”.
However, not all reviews were negative. One of them said, “I don’t mind wearing this as long as you respect the Hindu religion.”
Rihanna’s photo has been retweeted more than 40,000 times via Twitter and more than 100,000 comments on the photo on her Instagram account.
Savage X Fenty did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment on Ganesha’s necklace. However, it appears on the brand’s website that he sold the boxer shorts in their entirety.
The god “Ganesha” represents wisdom and success, and paintings or depictions of deities are generally made in India, to be used to help worshipers communicate with them.
It is reported that this is not the first time Rihanna has sparked a division of opinion in India.
The controversy came just two weeks after Rihanna voiced support for farmers protesting against the country’s new farm laws.
At the time, Rihanna posted a link to CNN’s story about the Internet shutdown in New Delhi after violent clashes between police and farmers, and commented, saying, “Why don’t we talk of that ?! “
A number of commentators were quick to link the “Ganesha” necklace to the international singer’s stance on the protests.
Ram Kadam, member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), wrote: “It is appalling to see Riana shamefully mocking our beloved Hindu god Ganesha … It shows that Riana has no idea and no respect for Indian culture and traditions or even our problems here. “
This is not the first time Rihanna has been accused of cultural obsession. In 2019, the international singer faced backlash on the internet after participating in a photoshoot for “Harper’s Bazaar” in its Chinese version.
The post was intended to show what happens when a Western fashion icon meets Eastern authenticity.
“Savage X Fenty” also drew criticism from some Muslims, after the words of a prophetic hadith were used in a song during a lingerie parade in October.
