Rock and roll reaches the surface of Mars after rolling rock

For more than 50 years, the rock band The Rolling Stones has rocked cinemas around the world. Its impact now seems to be spreading in space after NASA's Mars Insight mission decided to name one of the rocks on the planet.

The Rolling Stones are slightly smaller than a golf ball and reportedly climbed a meter from the Insight landing on Mars in November.

Robert Downey Jr. announced the name of rock as members of the group: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts, preparing for a ceremony, Thursday night, at Pasadena Rose Ball Stadium near the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from NASA.

The group, known for songs such as Simpathy with the Devil and Brown Sugar, called the tribute a "milestone in its long and eventful history."

NASA has stated that although this designation is unofficial, it will appear on Mars maps.

Comets or other objects of the solar system receive official names only through the International Astronomical Union.
