The international journal “Planetary Science Journal” published that Moroccan researchers from the Laboratory of Physics and Astrophysics of High Energies and the Oukaimeden Observatory of the Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech have contributed to a new astronomical discovery.
The study, which was published jointly by researchers from the Okaimden Astronomical Observatory and researchers from the US space agency “NASA”, showed that seven rocky planets of the star “TRAPPIST 1”, discovered in February 2017 in the international version, “Nature”, have remarkably similar densities.
The study found, according to a statement from Cadi Ayyad University, released on January 22, that the discovery could mean that the planets contain almost the same minerals that are believed to form the rocky planets, such as iron, oxygen. , magnesium and silicon. Thus, the formation of the star planet “TRAPPIST-1” is completely different from the Earth, since it has a density of 8% lower than that of the planet Earth, and on this basis, the researchers hypothesized that a random mixture of minerals could give the “TRAPPIST-1” planets this density.
Since the initial observation of the worlds of the star “TRAPPIST-1”, researchers have continued to observe and study the seven planets closely, through the use of a space and terrestrial telescope, in addition to the mission of Observation from the Okaimeden Astronomical Observatory and other ground-based telescopes, the researchers used data from the “Kepler” space telescope and the “Spitzer” telescope.
