NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – A recent study by scientists at the University of Salford recently revealed what they thought was the cell responsible for all other cancer cells, or the mother cell producing all cancers.
The lab results showed the cancer cell, describing their finding as "someone who finds a needle in a haystack".
Scientists hope to rewrite the medical history of cancer growth and believe that this could be a blow to current cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy.
The laboratory scientists tested two breast cancer samples and used a bright pigment to isolate the most active cells extracted from the samples.
Scientists have noted that a very small fraction of cells, called "active cancer stem cells", have a larger map than their counterparts and have the ability to create tumors, spread and reproduce very quickly.
It is not yet known how dishonest cells break off from normal cells, but are linked to aging and bring cells closer to death.
"We should press the reset button, like on the computer, to show how cancer patients are treating us with drugs," said Professor Michael Lisanti, who led the study.
"Scientists talk about cancer being caused by the death of cells that are returning to life or so-called zombie cells, but we now see that it is more dramatic than that," he said. The original cell is separated from the general cell line and causes confusion and chaos, proliferation of malignant cells and the result of tumors.
He warned that some types of chemotherapy could push stem cells to cause more cancer cells and spread tumors.
