USNews notes that the experts conducted 37 different studies, all related to smoking, and found that smokers were 30% and 40% more likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, respectively, than those who had never smoked. In addition, by smoking 20 cigarettes a day, the risk of developing dementia increased by 34%. And smoking also increases the risk of stroke.
According to scientists, quitting smoking helps reduce the risk of developing these diseases. And that the level of this risk decreases more with the passage of time after stopping smoking. For example, after 9 years, their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease becomes equal to the risk of developing people who have never smoked in their life.
And Jennifer Dale, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University, points out that quitting smoking helps at all stages of life, but it’s best to do it early. She adds that it is better to quit smoking in middle age and not later.
