Scientists bewildered … the ambiguity surrounding long-term crown symptoms

The mystery still surrounds the long-term symptoms that accompany people who recover from a Corona virus infection for months, despite studies and testing by doctors.

Swiss doctor Maysam Nehme revealed at a conference organized by the Institut Pasteur at the end of September that more research should be carried out on “long-term Covid disease and its patients”.

Like many other researchers around the world, the doctor has strived to give a better definition of long-term Covid disease, which is the persistence of symptoms in a patient who was infected months ago with the virus which causes Covid-19.

One third of patients suffer

After studying several hundred patients, Naama estimated that more than a third of them continue to suffer from at least one symptom seven, eight or nine months after the injury, according to what was cited by the agency. France-Presse.

It is not known what can cause these symptoms to persist: does a small amount of the virus remain in the body? Does the damage it causes to certain parts of the body persist, whether the damage is related to the virus itself or to the immune response, or is there a purely psychological component?

But the question on the causes leads to another question: is there a long covid or do we classify under the same term different facts between patients with mild forms of covid and others who have developed complications requiring hospitalization or even resuscitation?

Symptoms are partly related to the virus

But a few weeks ago, many studies, like that of Nima, went in a direction that spoke of the existence of the specificity of Covid-19. Unlike studies conducted quickly at the start of the epidemic, they compare the frequency of symptoms with patients who do not have them or who have developed other illnesses.

This is the case of the study published by a British team at the end of last September, in the journal PLOS One. Based on data collected from nearly 300,000 patients, the researchers note that typical symptoms of long Covid-19 are more common in former Covid patients than in patients with seasonal flu.

The study said that this “suggests that the origin (of the symptoms) may be partly linked to infection with SARS-CoV-2”, the virus that causes Covid.

However, it is still difficult to draw conclusions as the study found a variety of symptoms depending on the severity of the original disease and the age of the patients.

It is noteworthy that after the onset of the health crisis in 2020, many patients reported that they are still suffering from symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty breathing and permanent loss of smell, after a long period of illness.
