Researchers at London University College and Lapfuro University concluded that excess body fat, especially in the abdomen and at the waist, could be caused by brain atrophy.
Scientists analyzed 9652 people from the British Biobank Study, which focused on complex, age-related diseases over four years. The body mass index, waist and hip measurements and total body fat were taken into account. Nearly 19% of people were obese.
Scientists examined brain work using magnetic resonance and assessed the size of gray and white matter. Participants were asked about their habits and lifestyle.
It turns out that obese people have a lower amount of gray matter than people with lower BMIs. The gray matter volume in people with a standard body mass index was 798, with a slight increase – 793, and overweight people – 786.
Scientists have noted that this degeneration was observed mainly in people suffering from obesity in the abdomen. The size of the white substance is not different for all participants.
The scientists said it was hard to say why and if obesity had contributed to brain atrophy or if the reduction in brain matter had resulted in weight gain.
