The interstellar comet, like the space rock known as Umuamwa, which entered our solar system in 2017, is moving towards Earth.
The comet known as C / 2019 Q4 (Borisov) was discovered for the first time by amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov in Crimea on August 30th.
Scientists from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Germany suggest that the interstellar comet, which we previously thought belonged to our solar system, could travel.
Astronomers are still trying to discover its orbit, but they think it could fly near Mars in October and reach the nearest point of the sun at the end of December.
This should allow scientists to study the comet so that it is too dark to be seen in early 2021.
"We now have a body born around another star and traveling towards us," said Dr. Olivier Hino, astronomer at the Observatory of Southern Europe.
Comet Borisov is probably the second object to visit our solar system from another stellar system: this is the first object ever to have been the space rock known as Umwamwa, which has puzzled scientists because it simultaneously contained the properties of the comet and the asteroid.
Unlike Umwamwa, the first images of Borisov's comet indicate that he has a small tail or a halo of dust when he flies towards us, features of Count Hino, as they carry ice heated by them. neighboring stars. This frees dust and gravel in the space.
Borisov dust can make tracking easier than Umamoa because it reflects sunlight, making it easier for scientists to study body composition.
