Scientists believe that they have successfully modified chickens to lay eggs containing "anti-cancer" drugs.
According to the British newspaper "Metro", researchers at the Roslyn Institute, Edinburgh University in Scotland, have changed the heredity of the chicken to allow it to lay eggs containing drugs that can treat cancer and other diseases.
Researchers say new and unprecedented technologies can be effective in producing cheaper drugs in the near future.
"Our research has shown that drugs found in genetically modified eggs work as effectively as drugs currently on the market."
Professor Helen Sang explained that many diseases affect humans "only because the body does not naturally produce enough of a particular chemical or protein".
"Genetically modified chickens can lay eggs that contribute to the production of arthritis drugs and certain cancers, in addition to the incomplete protein in the human body," Sky News reported.
If the results of the research are confirmed, this process will be able to produce large quantities of commercial eggs, since a hen lays 300 eggs a year without harming the health.
