Sports exercises help treat cartilage damage

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Exercise and motor activity can prevent the deterioration of cartilage due to osteoporosis, according to a new study.

The study, published in the March issue of the Journal of Osteoporosis and Cartilage, explains the benefits of exercise on the tissues that make up our joints.

For the first time, researchers have shown how the mechanical forces of joint cells during exercise prevent the deterioration of cartilage by inhibiting the work of inflammatory molecules responsible for arthritis.

This anti-inflammatory effect of physical activity results from the activation of a specific protein called HDAC6, which causes modifications of the proteins that form the primary cysts. It has been observed that drugs inhibiting the Activation of the HDAC6 protein, Prevention of the anti-inflammatory effects of physical activity, while other pharmaceutical treatments were able to simulate the benefits of exercise.

The researchers hope the findings will help to find treatments for arthritis, which affects more than 3 million people in the UK and causes severe and painful joints.

The researchers suggest that the results could lead to a whole new therapeutic approach called mechanical medicine, where drugs mimic the influence of mechanical forces to prevent the damaging effects of inflammation and treat cases such as arthritis.
