NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – According to a recent scientific study conducted by Italian researchers, statins called cholesterol are more effective when combined with Mediterranean diets.
Cardiac patients who persisted in their Mediterranean diet while taking cholesterol-lowering drugs were less likely to die from a heart attack or stroke, the researchers said.
The Mediterranean diet or the Mediterranean diet consists of many vegetables, olive oil and oily fish.
The researchers point out that cholesterol-lowering drugs reduce inflammation, not just cholesterol, when statins are associated with the Mediterranean diet.
"We found that taking statins and a Mediterranean diet was more effective than just one of these systems in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease," said Dr. Marialora Bonacio, an epidemiologist.
The research was published in the International Journal of Cardiology.
