Former South African international striker Vail Massinga was killed by a 49-year-old man, the South African Football Association announced on Sunday.
Massinga played for Leeds United between 1994 and 1996, as well as for St. Gallen, Switzerland, Salernitana and Bari, Italy.
"It's a sad day for South African football," said South African Football Association President Danny Jordan.
"He is a loyal football player both inside and outside the stadium."
Massinga made his first appearance in South Africa in July 1992 in a match against Cameroon.
Masinga is known for his goal against Congo, giving South Africa their first appearance at the 1998 World Cup.
Massinga joined South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
Massinga played 31 games with Leeds United and scored five goals.
