Dozens of people, most of them teenagers, have been hospitalized in the United States because of lung problems reported in recent weeks with one common factor – smoking electronic cigarettes – without being responsible.
Health agencies in the northern states of Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin reported cases of coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue and turnover.
A total of 30 cases were registered and 22 opened.
Officials from all three states said it was too early to say whether the problems were interrelated.
"Until now, the electronic cigarette has become the only factor common to all these cases, but we are trying to broaden our search so we do not forget anything," said Thomas Hobt, respiratory disease specialist at the system. of Wisconsin Health.
Some youths also smoked cannabis in electronic cigarettes.
Electronic cigarettes have been available in the United States since 2006 and scientists now consider them as less harmful than an ordinary cigarette.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these cigarettes smoked 3.6 million students in complementary and secondary schools in 2018.
