Syrian weightlifter Maan Asaad won his country’s first medal at the current Summer Olympics in Tokyo, winning bronze in the weightlifting competitions in the 109kg category.

Asaad, 27, lifted 190 kg in the snatch and 234 in the net (424 kg), to finish third behind Georgian Lasha Talakhadze, who broke the world record with 488 kg, and Iranian Ali Daoudi ( 441 kg).
