A brand new Tesla Model S Plaid caught fire on Tuesday night in Pennsylvania while its owner was driving it, CNBC reported.
Tesla began shipping the Model S Plaid, a new high-performance version of its flagship electric vehicle, in June, after CEO Elon Musk said on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast that they would begin deliveries in February.
Musk explained in April that the development of the car was “more difficult than expected”, and added, “It took a lot of development to make sure the battery in the new S and X cars was safe.”
Lawyers for the car owner told CNBC he noticed smoke coming from the back of his 2021 S Plaid model and tried to open the doors but was forced out of the car because the locks appeared to be broken. After leaving the car, it started to move on its own and caught fire.
The fire official told CNBC that two fire crews worked at the scene for more than 3 hours to deal with the emergency.
And as NBC News recently reported, electric vehicle battery fires can use up to 25,000 gallons of water, to be completely extinguished. In comparison, a typical internal combustion engine car fire can be put out with about 300 gallons of water.
CNBC said it would conduct an independent investigation to try to determine the cause of the fire. The fire official said his teams were in contact with Tesla, who will soon release more information via public records.
A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told CNBC the department was aware of the Tesla fire in Pennsylvania and was in contact with the relevant agencies and the manufacturer to gather more information about the accident. .
“If the data or investigations reveal an inherent security defect or risk, management will take appropriate action to protect customers,” the spokesperson added.
Tesla is expected to reveal the number of vehicles it produced and delivered in the last quarter in the coming days. He has yet to say how many new Model S or S Plaid cars have been delivered to his customers.
