MADRID (Reuters) – Barcelona, president and defending champion, has expressed confidence in the renewal of Argentina star Lionel Messi, five times the best player in the world.

"Messi will continue with us, he is a permanent player in this club and the relationship will last forever," said Josep Maria Bartomio, during a radio interview in Spain.
Since becoming a member of the club, he has played only in Barcelona. In 2005, he became the first team and won a series of titles, including nine titles in the Spanish league, four in the Champions League and six in the Spanish Cup.
Messi extended his contract from 2017 to 2021, expressing his desire to end his career within the Catalan team.
"Messi's contract ends two years later, but because of his way of playing, we will keep it for many years," added Bartomeo.
"Liu is smart, he knows how to evaluate things, when he decides to renew the contract."

Messi follows his season with Barcelona, scoring 21 goals in the league, before suffering a muscle injury that affected his participation last week.
"I know that one day, Lionel will say that he's going to retire and that we have to bring the team into the future," Bartomio said a week after revealing that his club had begun preparations for the post-Messi phase.
Messi has already played 665 games with Barça, scoring 581 goals and 246 assists.
