The conflict between Apple and Epic is not over yet
For years, there has been a dispute between Apple and Epic Games over the system of fees that Apple imposes on developers who place their apps on the App Store, where Apple takes 30% of purchases made in apps and apps. games on the store, and Apple sees a need for businesses to pay these fees, but Epic believes it’s a monopoly because Apple doesn’t allow businesses to provide other payment methods outside of it. of its own system.
Epic provided its own in-game payment method for Fortnite away from Apple, which forced Apple to remove the game from the store because Epic was violating store policy, then Epic went to court and sued in justice against Apple on this matter.
Yesterday a ruling was issued in this case, which requires Apple to allow companies to provide alternative payment methods in non-Apple games, and this ruling must be implemented within 90 days, but at the same time, the court said it wouldn’t view Apple as a monopoly company in this case, but it violated some state of California competition laws.
There was also another move in favor of Apple, which required Epic to pay 30% (over $ 3.5 million) of the revenue it earned when it provided its own payments system in the Fortnite game, due to its violation of the signed contract. between her and Apple.
Apple has commented on the move and sees it as a victory for it, as the company said the move upholds what the company previously said, which is that it does not violate monopoly law. Epic said the move is disappointing and not a win for developers and users, and that it will appeal to it.
