Italian TV channel Rai Sport said Paolo Rossi was; Italy’s top scorer in winning the 1982 FIFA World Cup title has died at the age of 64.
Rossi worked as a match analyst for RAI Sport.
“It’s sad news, Paolo Rossi has passed away,” said Enrico Varalli, broadcaster of RAI Sport.
Variali did not disclose the cause of death.
“Pableto, the unforgettable one who made us fall in love with the summer of 1982 and who has been a very valuable colleague who has specialized in Ray in recent years,”
His wife Federica Cappelletti posted a photo of the two together and wrote “Forever”.
“There will never be someone like you, unique, special,” she wrote on Facebook. The letter ends with a heart-shaped emoji.
Rossi led the wonderful team, which in 1982 defeated Brazilian teams Zico, young Argentinian Diego Maradona and German Karl Heinz Rummenigge, on their way to winning the World Cup in Spain.
With his six goals in his last three World Cup matches, Rossi led Italy to their third World Cup title, became the tournament’s top scorer and rose to the rank of legend in Italian football.
His shine came barely two months after the expiration of a two-year ban due to the match-fixing scandal in Italy in the 1979/80 season.
