LONDON (Reuters) – A component of eye drops for the treatment of retinal diseases can be used as an effective way to treat leukemia, according to a study in the United Kingdom.
Scientists have published their findings in Nature Communications. The eye drops SPHINX31 compound, commonly used in the treatment of diseases of the retina, can inhibit the activity of a gene responsible for the activity and proliferation of cancer cells.
The efficacy of this compound was tested in laboratory mice injected with leukemic cells and treated with SPHINX31. Scientists note that growth and proliferation of cancer cells have become slow without any side effects.
"This discovery gives us the potential to develop methods of treating acute myeloid leukemia and could become the basis for the treatment of other cancers," according to scientists.
