Scientists have discovered what is thought to be the oldest cancerous tumor in history, in the bones of a living turtle 240 million years ago, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
The discovery highlights the development of cancerous diseases that have been exhausting for thousands of years.
The doctors discovered the tumor in the thigh bone of the turtle and compared it to the bone sarcoma that affects humans today.
"This study proves that tumors began to appear early in the Triassic Period and that cancer is not a recent physiological defect, but rather a weakness inherent in the evolution of humanity," said Yara Hridi, a professor of science at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin.
Bone cancer causes life-threatening pain and about 550 new cases of bone cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK alone.
Orthopedic sarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer and can develop anywhere in the body, usually affecting teens and young people.
