Orascom Construction BV Les. CBC said Orascom Construction’s alliance with Hitachi ABB Power Grids signed a contract today with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to do all work in Egypt to connect the two national power grids. in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, while an alliance of Hitachi ABB Power Grids and Saudi Company for Electricity Services SSEM for electrical and mechanical works to operate in Saudi Arabia.
Orascom Construction said in a statement that this distinguished project is one of the most advanced HVDC (high voltage direct current) projects of its kind in the world and the world’s first intercontinental HVDC project.
She added that the project would allow the two countries to trade up to 3 gigawatts at peak times, providing electricity to more than 20 million people using the latest technology to ensure maximum efficiency.
In addition, connecting the HVDC to all of Egypt and Saudi Arabia improves the efficiency of energy transport and exchange networks, thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint.
The total value of the project in the two countries is in the hundreds of millions of US dollars, and funding will be provided by a development finance institution.
The alliance of Orascom Construction and Hitachi ABB Power Grids will build the HVDC transfer station in northeast Cairo and the transition station in Taba, Sinai.
The first phase of the project should start at the end of 2024 with a capacity of 1.5 GW, and a balanced capacity in mid-2025.
Orascom Construction has implemented power generation projects in Egypt in recent years, adding more than 12.5 gigawatts since 2015.
