Experts from the British National Museum in London unveiled "hidden drawings" in a painting by Leonardo da Vinci in 1508 entitled "The Virgin with the Rocks".
Paintings discovered in the painting, over 500 years old, showed hidden drawings and sketches representing "Angel and Christ".
Experts used advanced imaging technology to reveal the hidden designs of the angel and Christ. The new analysis of the painting showed that the angle of the head of the child Jesus had been changed so that his features could be seen, while a few tufts of curly angel hair were removed in the final painting.
"For the first time, Leonardo's initial projects for angel and Christ can be seen, which shows significant differences as to how they appear in the final painting," said the London National Gallery.
"The invisible drawing shows the two characters at a higher level of painting, while the angel looks at the Christ child, as he embraced her," the statement added.
This is not the first time a mystery is discovered in one of Da Vinci's paintings: in 2005, infrared imagery revealed a hidden sketch of the Virgin in one of the paintings.
