Leishmaniasis is common among the population, particularly among groups of displaced people who can sleep under the stars: it is divided into two species, the large leishmania and the tropical leishmania, transmitted by the bite of an insect called seragent .

"Various therapeutic interventions lead to partial or complete healing of important lesions of leishmaniasis, but are less effective in the case of tropical leishmaniasis," said the study director, researcher at the American University of Beirut in collaboration with the University of Montpellier in France. "In addition, all available treatments can be highly toxic, expensive, and have a high risk of relapse and drug resistance." The presence of an effective drug remains elusive and new strategies need to be developed. "

The researchers tested two types of drugs, the Eimquimod, available on the market, and another called EAPB0503, both of which gave very good results in the treatment of warts and strengthened the body's immunity against the lesion.

"We intend to continue to work together and develop a cream formula containing EAPB0503 for topical use and we are working on the development of living mouse models of cutaneous leishmaniasis, a very important step in the perspective of clinical trials, "said Heba Al Haj.
