The “light of the zodiac” shines in the sky of the Arab world at night

The weeks near the spring equinox in late February, March and early April are the best time of year to see the zodiacal light at the start of the night, with the sky over the Arab world and the entire northern hemisphere.

According to the Jeddah Astronomical Society, the light of the zodiac is a faint, hierarchical, hazy white glow that stretches from the point of sunset towards the stars of Taurus, including the star Aldebaran and the Pleiades star cluster. which will appear above the western horizon at the beginning of the night, in addition to Mars, and the light of the zodiac should not be confused with the studded belt of the Milky Way, the stars that we see at the northwest horizon.

Zodiacal light does not have a pink color, unlike the red sky at sunset resulting from the scattering of sunlight due to the atmosphere around the earth. As for the zodiacal light, its source is outside the earth’s atmosphere, it is formed thanks to the sunlight reflected by the dust particles that move in the plane of the earth and other planets, which revolve around from the sun.

The reason the zodiacal light becomes apparent at this time of year is that (as seen from the northern hemisphere) the apparent path of the sun, moon, and planets – is almost straight to the horizon after the sunset.

It should be noted that for those who live in the southern hemisphere, the opposite happens to them, because the end of winter and the beginning of spring (August, September and October) are the best time to see the Zodiacal light in the evening, but now (February, March, April) the zodiacal light is observed in the eastern horizon before dawn in this part of the world.
