The mystery of the disappearance of the Ugandan weightlifter in Japan before the start of the Olympics

The Ugandan weightlifter who disappeared from a training camp in the Japanese town of Izumisano said in a note which was later discovered that he intended to settle in Japan, reported the Japanese news agency “Kyodo”.

Ugandan weightlifter Julius Siketoliko was reported missing on Friday after failing to show up to present a saliva sample during coronavirus screening, as required.

The Ugandan Olympic Committee has since confirmed the disappearance of the 20-year-old and said in a statement that the team “was cooperating with the authorities in Osaka to try to locate Mr. Sikitoliko”.

Then it turned out that while he was in Japan, his world rankings dropped and he couldn’t compete in the Olympics, and he and his coach had to leave Japan.

Later, a note was found in the athlete’s room, in which he said he “will not return to a country where it is difficult to live in and seek work in Japan”.

He also left a message for his wife in Uganda, who later revealed that he had bought a ticket at a high-speed train station to Nagoya, a large city halfway between Tokyo and Osaka.

Police are still trying to locate the Ugandan weightlifter.

Julius Siketoliko was training with the nine-member Ugandan team in Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture.

The Olympics, which have been postponed due to the pandemic, begin on July 23 despite growing concerns over an upsurge in infections in Tokyo.
