The project consists of an Atlas Star Sky, an astral reserve covering a large area, including the Toubkal National Park. The International Association of Dark Skies defines this type of reserve as an area with a starry sky of exceptional quality and protected for scientific, educational, cultural or conservation purposes.
Zuhair Ben Khaldoun, director of the Okimden Observatory, said in an interview with Akhbar Al Youm that the observatory was calling local authorities, 10 years ago, to solve the problem of pollution light. In all regions of the world, there are only 12 similar projects in the dark sky approved by the Dark Sky International Association (8 in Europe, 2 in America, 1 in Africa, and then in Oceania). The Mont-Mégantic project in Canada is the largest of its kind in the world, with a diameter of about 50 km.
But if the Okademen observatory project is accepted, "the Dark Dark Sky International Observatory will be the first protected area in North Africa and the largest in the world in terms of space, with a diameter of about 80 km ", did he declare. Through this project, Kadi Ayyad University aims to stimulate the sustainable development movement following the Kobe 22 conference in Marrakech and to provide all the citizens of the region with the expected social and economic benefits. "
The Okinalden Observatory has contributed to several outstanding scientific projects. Over the past year, he has participated in the tremendous work of researchers from around the world to discover a cold star about 39 light-years away, around which seven planets revolve around.
Then, a few months ago, he returned to the discovery of a new asteroid, in an American agency, NASA, called "YE52017", two bodies and a height of 900 meters. The property of this asteroid is the intersection of its orbit with that of the Earth.
The Okeiden Observatory was founded in 2007 by a group of Moroccan experts, chaired by its director, Benkhaldoun, who received his first state doctorate in astrophysics. The observatory has all the necessary scientific standards, which has allowed it to participate in many research alongside NASA, the most experienced in the world.
