A recent American study warned that drinking very hot tea, at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius, doubles the risk of esophageal cancer.
The study was conducted by researchers from the American Cancer Society and published in the International Journal of Cancer.
Previous studies have shown a connection between hot tea consumption and the risk of esophageal cancer, but so far, the study has not identified the association using the temperature of the tea or daily.
In order to achieve the results of the new study, the team continued for 5,500 people aged 40 to 75 years.
During the follow-up period, the research team monitored 317 new cases of esophageal cancer among participants.
According to the Anatolian News Agency, researchers have found that consuming 700 ml or more of hot tea daily at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius is associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer of 90% per compared to tea drinkers, but not hot.
"Many people like to drink tea, coffee or other hot drinks, but it's a good idea to wait for the drinks to cool before eating them," said Dr. Farhad Islam. , head of the research team of the American Cancer Society.
"As long as you let the tea cool a bit before you drink it or add cold milk to lower the temperature, it is unlikely that it is at risk of esophageal cancer."
The study supports the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) published in 2016, according to which drinks over 65 ° C are converted into potential carcinogens.
Esophageal cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the world and causes the death of 400,000 people a year, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
It usually occurs as a result of oesophageal lesions due to smoke, alcohol and acid reflux.
