The Russian Federal Space Agency (ROSCOSMOS), in cooperation with the Russian Academy of Sciences, has started to develop a program to protect against space threats.

"These threats include asteroids, comets and space stones," said Roskosmos, quoted by the Russian news agency Sputnik. The end dates of the study and the setting up of the program have not been announced.

Space debris – in close orbit – could cause the greatest damage to Earth, accumulated over the past decades "in huge quantities" and not celestial objects, the statement added.

Up to now, according to various sources, there would be up to 20,000 space debris in orbit.
