The skies of the Arab world will see the peak of the dragon meteors fall tonight, Wednesday and tomorrow, Thursday, in a phenomenon seen with the naked eye without the need for telescopes or special monitoring devices.
The Jeddah Astronomical Society has stated that the dragon meteors are active every year from October 6-10, and unlike many meteor showers that are monitored after midnight, the dragon meteor drop is high after sunset and the start of the night.
It should be noted that the best time to observe it is immediately after dark from a completely dark place away from the city lights (not from the house) and to look towards the northern horizon of the sky dome, and the human eye will need about 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness and the observer should give himself at least an hour to see someone meteors;
This year, the moon will be in the last square phase and rise before midnight according to local time, which will leave the sky at the start of dark night to listen to the Dragons’ meteor sighting.
As for the number of falling meteors, it cannot be determined with precision, sometimes their number does not exceed a few, but it needs to be monitored to make sure.
Typically, dragon meteors fall at a rate of about 10 meteors per hour and their source is dust particles scattered throughout the orbit of comet “Jaacoboni Zener”, first discovered in 1900 .
It should be noted that the dragon meteors produced meteor storms in the years 1933 and 1946, where thousands of meteors were recorded per hour and the comet appeared in 1998, and also fell at a rate of about 100 meteors per hour and 9 years ago in October 2011, around 600 meteors per hour were recorded despite the presence of the moon simultaneously with meteors that night.
The reason that meteor showers are sometimes good, as happened in 2011 compared to other years, is that the comet, the source of these meteors, was at the point closest to the sun, which means more dust particles scattered along its orbit, then the meteor display is at its best.
During the year 2020, a meteor storm is not expected for the Dragon, but we cannot be sure exactly what will happen. We have to remember that meteors are notorious for defying expectations because they surprise us with a special fall or fall below expectations.
It should be noted that most meteor showers get their name from the group of stars that appear in front of them from our perspective on the earth’s surface, and in the case of these meteors, their starting point is in front of the group of dragon stars.
