A new study has shown that the use of antibiotics was associated with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers from Keele University and the Quadram Institute in Britain then analyzed data from primary health care records.
The researchers found that the risk of rheumatoid arthritis was 60% higher in people exposed to antibiotics than in those who did not.
Rheumatoid arthritis affects 400,000 people in the UK and this study indicates that it affects 26 out of every 100,000 people who have taken antibiotics.
Although this study has been important, it can not confirm with certainty whether antibiotics increase the risk or the infection itself.
"The more we learn about how factors, including antibiotics, affect these diverse microbial ecosystems," said Lindsay Hall, head of the Quadram Institute Group's research team.
The challenge now is to unravel the mechanisms that bind microbes to different conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, in order to develop new treatments.
