The Kiwi University Hospital has allowed a baby weighing just 268 grams at birth, the youngest baby in the world, to survive despite its small size, to return home after spending months at the hospital in Tokyo.
The boy was born in a Caesarean section in August after failing to gain weight during pregnancy and doctors feared his life was in danger.
The baby remained in the intensive care unit until he weighed 3.2 kg and the hospital was allowed to leave on February 20, said Dr. Takeshi Arimitsu of the pediatric department of the university medical school.
"I'm grateful that he grew up like that because frankly I was not sure of his survival," said the child's mother.
According to the smaller infants of the University of Iowa, the previous record weight concerned a 274-gram baby born in Germany in 2009.
The record also indicates that the youngest child born was 252 grams in Germany in 2015.
