"We know that easy access to guns in the Americas contributes to higher suicide rates," told reporters Alexandra Fleischman of WHO's Department of Mental Health.
WHO said the overall decline explains that a number of 38 countries have developed suicide reduction strategies, noting that many countries should do the same.

"Preventive measures can be taken to reduce suicide," Tedros said, calling on all countries to adopt effective suicide prevention strategies in health and education programs in a sustainable manner.
Suspending, firing and poisoning pesticides, especially in rural areas, are the most common methods of suicide.
The report shows that most suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries where most of the world's population lives, but rates were higher in richer countries.

After Guyana, Russia had the second highest rate in the world, with 26.5 suicides per 100,000 population.
Lithuania, Lesotho, Uganda, South Korea, Sri Lanka, India and Japan also scored high, with the United States reporting 13.7 suicides per 100,000 population.
In almost all countries, men were more suicidal than women. It is only in five countries – Bangladesh, China, Lesotho, Morocco and Burma – that women have committed suicide more than men.
Under 45
The report also showed that more than half of suicides were under 45 years old. Among young people aged 15 to 29, suicide was the second most common cause of death after road accidents.
The organization announced that it would launch a one-month campaign starting September 10 on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, including a reference manual for filmmakers.
