Thousands of Algerians are demonstrating Tuesday in several cities to demand immediate political change, witnesses said.

Algerians demand political change after President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's decision not to run for a fifth term.

Workers in the city of Bejaia began a strike that paralyzed port operations in the city, the Reuters quoted Al-Nahar TV channel as saying.

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced Monday that he would not stand for re-election and ordered the postponement of the presidential election scheduled for April 18, 2019.

Bouteflika has appointed Noureddine Badawi as prime minister, replacing Ahmed Ouyahia, who has resigned, said the APS.

Since 22 February, Algeria has attended peaceful demonstrations and rallies calling on President Bouteflika not to run for another term, to change regimes and to leave all current political faces.
