And between December 15, 1788 and January 10, 1789, the United States of America experienced the impact of the first presidential elections in its history. In the midst of this historic event, George Washington swept the Electoral College and won all the votes with 69 votes, becoming the country’s first president while John Adams was named vice president.

George Washington waited 57 days to confirm his victory. During this entire period, members of Congress were unable to meet to validate the election results due to a lack of quorum.
On learning of his electoral victory and the confirmation of his inauguration, George Washington left his farm in Virginia for New York in mid-April 1789.
On his way, George Washington was surprised by the treatment Americans gave him in the cities he passed through. In Philadelphia, a child placed a laurel wreath on Washington’s head before being forced to ride around town on a white horse. And in Trenton, people built an arch of flowers to greet George Washington and gathered around him to thank him for his role in the War of Independence.
