WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Finasteride, used by US President Donald Trump to fight baldness, could reduce the risk of prostate cancer, researchers at the University of Texas said today. University of Texas.

The drug, marketed under the brand name Propecia, can give hope to thousands of men, protecting them from 25% against the risk of prostate cancer.
The experiment, which began 25 years ago, involved about 20,000 men, making it one of the largest prostate cancer trials ever conducted. According to the results published in New England, fewer than 100 men who participated in the prevention of prostate cancer had died of this disease.
"The drug is safe, inexpensive and effective as a preventative strategy against prostate cancer," said Dr. Ian Thompson of the US-based Swog Cancer Network. "Doctors should inform patients about the benefits of this drug, especially those who are routinely tested for PSA (a blood test for prostate cancer)," he said.
The research team points out that prostate cancer prevention drugs will have "a significant impact on public health", especially as the diagnosis of the prostate is on the rise.
