On Friday, Tunisian Prime Minister Hicham El Mechichi ruled out the possibility of his resigning from office due to the constitutional crisis in Tunisia due to the raging conflict with President Qais Saeed.
Al-Machishi, who has led a technocratic government since last September, told reporters on Friday that he was a “soldier in the service of the nation” and would not resign.
Tunisia is going through a complex constitutional crisis due to President Qais Said’s refusal to accept the new ministers chosen by Prime Minister Hisham El-Mechichi during the cabinet reshuffle, to be sworn in after winning the confidence of Parliament on January 26.
President Said attributed his stance to his reservations about some ministers, saying suspicions of corruption and conflicts of interest hovered around some of them. The Tunisian president also expressed his objection to the measures accompanying the amendment because, in his opinion, they lacked a constitutional basis.
“We will find solutions that guarantee the continuity of public service. Failure to invite ministers to take the oath has disrupted the interests of the state,” Al-Meshishi said.
