The Turkish Central Bank topped the list of major central banks to buy gold globally in 2020, for the second year in a row.

Turkey’s central bank increased its gold reserves through direct purchases by 451.4 tonnes during the period from May 2017 to October 2020.
Turkey is ranked 12th in the world in the list of largest central banks owning gold, with reserves estimated at 567.9 tonnes, or 44.8% of the central bank’s total reserve holdings.
The Turkish Central Bank’s gold possession registered 413 tons at the end of 2019.
Turkey’s central bank ownership reached its highest level in August at 606.6 tonnes, which then represented 48.6% of total foreign exchange reserves.
