WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The leading US auto safety regulator announced Tuesday the opening of an investigation into three million cars from Hyundai and Kia, two South Korean companies, after reviewing 3,000 fires that killed more than 100 people
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the investigation followed a complaint from the Motor Vehicle Safety Center.
Investigations include the Kia Obitama and Swinton models manufactured between 2011-2014 and Kia Sol 2010-2015, as well as the Hyundai Sonata between 2011-2014.
The two companies have recalled more than 2.3 million cars since 2015, defects related to engines.
In early trading, Hyundai shares fell 2.5%, while Kia shares fell 1.1%.
