Warning to use smart speakers to spy on users

Technology investor John Porthwick and the former CEO of Time Warner and AOL warned that smart speakers are being used to spy on user users such as Google and Amazon. He said that the process of collecting information by these amplifiers is comparable to monitoring.

"From a consumer's point of view, these devices are used for things that are difficult to call other than surveillance," he said, explaining that government regulation may be the only guarantee of user privacy.

He predicted that regulators would offer more privacy control to device users and that there would be more levels of regulation allowing data control for consumers. Users must be able to understand and control how their data is used, he said.

He also warned that manufacturers of smart speaker technologies are getting more than just audible response recordings.
