But she apologized on Wednesday, announcing that the incorrect name “Voltswagen of America” was nothing more than “April Fools,” launched a bit early.

Volkswagen officials were frustrated that its electric car production efforts had garnered less media and public attention than US company Tesla.

A Volkswagen spokesperson told Reuters the company intends to boost the image of the new car in “fun and interesting” ways. “The many positive reactions on social media showed that the campaign had resonated with consumers.”

However, he continued, “At the same time, we realize that the advertisement has bothered some people. We apologize for any confusion caused by this.”
