One study found that diabetes during pregnancy increases the risk of heart problems within 10 years of birth. Although so-called gestational diabetes has long been associated with an increased risk of heart disease later, some research suggests that this possibility may depend on the progression of the disease to type 2 diabetes that continues after birth. Researchers examined data from nine studies of approximately 5.4 million mothers.

In total, about 8,000 women with a history of gestational diabetes had heart problems, including heart attacks and strokes, as well as more than 93,000 women without gestational diabetes.
"This study shows that women with gestational diabetes have twice as many heart problems as women," said Dr. Ravi Ratnakaran of the University of Toronto, who led the research group.
"The increased risk of infection does not depend on type 2 diabetes. The difference in risk between women with gestational diabetes and the others appears within 10 years of birth."
Even after only looking at type 2 diabetes after pregnancy, the researchers found that gestational diabetes was associated with a 56% increase in the risk of serious heart problems.
The researchers concluded that women with gestational diabetes may require periodic cardiac tests even at a relatively young age.
