WHO adds Colombian coronavirus mutant to watchlist

Reuters Denis Balibouse

The World Health Organization has included the B.1.621 mutant of the Corona virus, discovered in Colombia last January, on its watch list.

The organization classified him in the VOI group, or “Transgenes of Interest”, and decided to use the Greek letter “myo” to refer to him.

It should be noted that the mutated versions of the virus included in the VOI group have “genetic modifications which would affect certain characteristics of the virus such as its transmission capacity, the severity of the disease, the ability of the virus to counter the immune response and its inability to diagnose and treat.

Copies included in this group can lead to significant spread of infection and the emergence of disease outbreaks, which in turn can pose risks to global public health.

This group is less dangerous than the VOC, or “mutants of concern” group, which includes the “alpha”, “beta”, “gamma” and “delta” versions of the Corona virus which spread faster, cause more severe disease and affect the effectiveness of drugs used against it. .
