In its seventh report on the global tobacco epidemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that e-cigarettes and tobacco heaters do not help fight cancer, urging smokers and governments to not rely on the claims of cigarette manufacturers on their latest products.
"Preventing interventions in the industry is essential to minimize the damage caused by tobacco consumption," said the company. "While there are secret and publicly declared strategies, they all aim to weaken tobacco control efforts."
The industry was trying to gain respect through manipulated messages, such as claiming that its products were part of a "harm reduction" strategy, although cigarettes still represent 97 % of the global tobacco market, the report said.
Vinayak Prasad, director of the World Health Organization's tobacco control program, told reporters that the development of new products was aimed solely at expanding tobacco manufacturers' markets. "There is no difference between cigarettes and tobacco heaters except in terms of exposure," he said. "The exposure is less and the smoke invisible".
Electronic cigarettes, which contain nicotine without tobacco, are encouraged as a way to stop smoking. But Prasad said there was no evidence to support this claim, as evidence from the United States showed that smoking had increased among young people.
