Russian scientists, who analyzed data from their Western colleagues on a possible sign of life in the atmosphere of Venus, after finding phosphine, came to the conclusion that it was mistaken for sulfur dioxide.

Oleg Koraplev, deputy director of the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told “Sputnik” that in September 2020, it was learned that British and American scientists had discovered phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus, a colorless poisonous gas which could be of biological origin. And on Earth, some bacteria excrete it during life.

And in October, a scientific publication on it was pulled from the ALMA radio telescope complex in Chile to re-examine the data after an error was discovered. And at the end of January, scientists at the University of Washington confirmed that their colleagues had mixed phosphine with sulfur dioxide.

“There were actually a lot of these papers refuting the presence of phosphine. In particular, when Dutch scientists reported that the wrong version of the program had been used when processing data from the ALMA complex, so the observations could not be considered statistically reliable. ” pointed out that during the first analysis, for the data of foreign colleagues, Russian scientists also considered that phosphine may be present in the atmosphere of Venus.

“Then the atmospheric model was studied more carefully, and according to the ideas circulating on Venus and its upper part, and in general, we have a similar impression that apart from sulfur dioxide in this area, it is no need to explain this data. ”

“This question needs further research,” Corablev pointed out, so the proposed Russian program for the study of Venus does not need to change.

“The atmosphere, especially the complex atmosphere of Venus, hides many mysteries. These tiny gases in small amounts in the atmosphere can provide information about completely different properties of the planet. On the contrary, it is a very good one. example we need more. “Explore Venus and use more sensitive methods.”

It is reported that the Russian exploration program for Venus includes three missions and that the first Venus-D will be launched in November 2029, and aims to study the surface, atmosphere, internal structure and plasma surrounding Venus. The mission of the second mission, which will depart in June 2031, is to continue studying the planet’s atmosphere, and the third, which begins in June 2034, is to deliver samples of the atmosphere, aerosols and possibly the soil of Venus.

In addition, the program could be supplemented by the urgent dispatch in 2027 of a station to study the potential signs of life in the atmosphere of Venus.
