Yemen's Taayesh Initiative Holds Early Breast Cancer Screening Campaign

The Yemeni Youth Coexistence Initiative continues its awareness campaign on the dangers of breast cancer and the need for early detection under the slogan "I will triumph over cancer".

"The campaign, which began in December, targets more than 1,000 women," said Abeer Al-Amir, Taayush initiative leader. "The idea was based on the belief of those responsible for the care of Yemeni women and their awareness of the risks of disease and the importance of early detection."

"The initiative encourages women to get screened for breast cancer, which can affect many of them without knowing it, which reduces the chances of receiving treatment," she said. she said, pointing out that the campaign was aimed at women and girls in institutes and schools. Governmental and private institutions, as well as "girls and women in the streets and public transport through the distribution of awareness leaflets, as well as campaign announcements in Yemeni governorates that were not covered by visits ".

She pointed out that volunteers participating in the campaign "are working to raise awareness of women with cancer indicators and of interest in early detection of the disease, non-escape, fear and resistance. especially since early examination contributes to a large extent to treatment ".

She pointed out that the campaign was aimed not only at women, but also at men as a link, encouraging and supporting women, sisters, mothers and daughters. "Most women are afraid of early detection and should be encouraged to do so," she said.

"Breast cancer is the highest number among the diseases that affected the population in Yemen during the war years, so it is necessary to raise public awareness of its symptoms," said the prince.

According to the Prince, the campaign faces many obstacles "which we can not reach all the provinces, especially the isolated areas, and the institutions that carry out tests for women can not receive a lot of them", emphasizing that more than 500 women have responded to the campaign since its inception.

Rana Abdel Rahman, one of the beneficiaries of the initiative, confirmed that the campaign had prompted her to visit the Center for Early Identification of Breast Cancer after receiving member awareness brochures. from the campaign team who visited his establishment.

Abdel Rahman told "The New Arab" that she had tried to "break the barrier of fear after her visit to the free examination center and to the examination, and the result was positive, even though she was afraid to go to the center before ". "I am now certain that early detection is very important to reduce the incidence of the disease and its importance in early treatment in case of infection."

The university student Ebthal, heavenly, is still waiting for her role in one of the health centers for the examination of the disease. "I understand the seriousness of the disease, but the more tests I take, the more I find the center filled," she told the new Arab.

Al-Samawi called on the government to work to increase the number of early and free breast cancer screening centers. "This will force many women to undergo tests."

According to statistics from the Oncology Center in Yemen in 2017, the proportion of women with breast cancer accounted for about 23% of the total number of tumors.
