Scalpers have sold nearly 50,000 Nvidia RTX 3000 graphics cards on eBay and sneaker site StockX, often at double the normal price, according to a new analysis.

It’s no secret that RTX 3000 graphics cards are sold at insane prices. However, Chicago-based data engineer Michael Driscoll has been tracking eBay sales using a computer script to understand the full extent of scalping.

On Tuesday, he provided an update on RTX 3000 sales after previously reporting that Scalpers sold 15,224 units on eBay in early December. The number has since risen to 39,064 units on all RTX models from the 3060 Ti to the 3090.

Additionally, Driscoll tracked RTX 3000 sales on StockX, a site best known for reselling hard-to-find sneakers from Nike and Adidas. According to its computer script, StockX has helped scalpers sell 10,616 units.

Together, 49,680 RTX 3000 GPUs were sold at the two sites, totaling $ 61.5 million in sales. Driscoll estimates that $ 15.2 million was made in profit for the scalpers, while an additional $ 6.8 million went to eBay and StockX. “In the case of the four RTX 30 series, there was a sudden surge in sales between Christmas and shortly after the New Year,” he said.

The price has also remained high despite the arrival of the RTX 3060 Ti, which normally costs $ 399. “The 3060 has gone from 160% of the 1/1/21 introductory price to now 210% of the introductory price and has recently fallen to 190% of the introductory price. The 3080 is a similar story, from 170% at Christmas to 200% now, ”he added.

A 25% US tariff covering motherboards and GPUs imported from China that went into effect on January 1 does not help the matter. As a result, GPU vendors and the scalpers themselves have increased prices further.

Unfortunately, the supply situation for RTX 3000 graphics cards may not improve anytime soon. Nvidia CFO Colette Kress said earlier this month that units “are likely to remain meager throughout the first quarter.”

“Our overall capacity has not been able to meet the strong overall demand that we have seen,” she added.

As for Driscoll, he plans to release updates this Thursday and Friday on the number of Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 unit scalpers sold on eBay and StockX.
