Hello and have a good Friday.
On Thursday, the San Francisco Giants thrillingly beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, lowering their magic number to two. Now they’re entering the final weekend of the regular season, and they do so with a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in NL West. The Giants host the San Diego Padres, while the Dodgers host the Milwaukee Brewers; neither of these two teams has anything more to play in the regular season.
The Giants also hold the tiebreaker, which doesn’t mean they win the division if the team finishes with identical records. It just means that they would stage a one-match tiebreaker, with the winner taking the division and the loser heading to the Wild Card knockout game.
Here are the scenarios:
- If the Giants sweep the Padres 3-0, then they win the NL West.
- If the Giants beat the Padres 2-1, then they win the NL West.
- If the Giants lose to the Padres 2-1 and the Dodgers sweep the Brewers 3-0, then the Giants and Dodgers play a decisive game. The Dodgers have no way of winning the division without playing Game No.163.
- If the Giants are swept away by the Padres 3-0 and the Dodgers sweep the Brewers 3-0, the Dodgers win the division. If the Dodgers beat the Brewers 2-1, the Giants and Dodgers will play a tiebreaker at Oracle Park.
The work is not yet done. But my God, the Giants are in a great position.
