Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer was arrested Sunday, January 17 after turning into authorities following his appearance on the FBI’s “ most wanted ” list for his participation in the riot on Capitol Hill . A photo of Schaffer, taken inside the Capitol, captured him wearing an “Oath Keepers Lifetime Member” hat. CNN now reports that Thomas Caldwell, a leader of the far-right anti-government group, was tasked with planning and coordinating part of the January 6 attack.
The Oath Keepers are an extremist, conspiratorial group heavily made up of former and current law enforcement officials and veterans who claim to defend the US Constitution. Court documents indicate that the Department of Justice has partly charged Caldwell, 65, based in Virginia, with conspiracy.
“Records obtained from Facebook indicate Caldwell was involved in the planning and coordination of the January 6 violation of the U.S. Capitol [separately charges plaintiff] Watkins, Crowl and other members of the Oath Keeper militia were involved, ”the record reads in part.
It is not known whether Schaffer was one of the alleged group of eight to ten rioters, all dressed in the paraphernalia of the Oath Keepers, who moved “in an organized and practiced manner and made their way past the crowd gathered around. ‘a door of the United States Capitol. , “by CNN.
Schaffer, who currently faces six federal charges and was seen wielding “bear spray” – a capsaicin-based deterrent spray designed to arm against hostile or aggressive bears – while inside the Capitol. The FBI alleges Schaffer was involved in a verbal altercation with police officers and was seen among a group of rioters who had deployed aerosol deterrents against Capitol Hill police.
He transformed into Hamilton County Police on Sunday afternoon (January 17) in his home state of Indiana. Local outlet Wish-TV recently reported that the founder of Iced Earth has since been transferred to the Marion County Jail, where he will remain next week pending an appearance before a U.S. magistrate. Schaffer may be released on bail after this hearing.
Earlier today (January 19), it was reported that Schaffer’s bands – Iced Earth and Demons & Wizards – were no longer appearing on the Century Media Records webpage, the original label for both groups.
Century Media’s repeated requests for comment as this story continues to develop have not been returned.
Ahead of the siege on the U.S. Capitol, Schaffer traveled to Washington DC to participate in a pro-Trump rally on November 15, just over a week after President-elect Joe Biden’s call. Schaffer spoke to a German media The world during the rally. He was asked what the purpose of his presence was and his thoughts on the potential for violence.
It should be noted that Schaffer’s rhetoric aligns with some of the conspiracy allegations claimed by the Oath Keepers group, as detailed by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

I think it goes beyond President Trump. President Trump is a populist. He’s not your typical Republican. He is not from the establishment. He’s not going to start wars everywhere like they do. What’s funny – where are all the Democrats who were against the war?
There is so much hatred for Trump, it’s just ridiculous. He’s dealing with a shadowy criminal mafia that has ruled the world, frankly, for a very long time. They want to destroy all of our sovereignty and establish a world government.
We don’t have it. We can still do business together, countries can still be at peace, but we are not going to merge into a globalist and communist system. It will not arrive. There will be a lot of bloodshed, if it comes down to it – trust me.
Americans won’t go for this bullshit – once they figure out what’s really going on. So that’s where we are. No one wants that, but they push us to a point where we have no choice.
