Schefter: Seattle Seahawks hire Shane Waldron as new offensive coordinator

The Seahawks have their new offensive coordinator. Rams game coordinator Shane Waldron has been hired by Seattle to replace Brian Schottenheimer, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Waldron has been with the Rams organization since 2017 and previously served as tight ends coach and quarterback coach. He came with Sean McVay from Washington in 2017.

Waldron probably brings with him some of McVay’s philosophies and creativity. McVay relies on a solid racing game, so it makes sense that Waldron ticks the necessary boxes for Pete Carroll. The goal is likely for Waldron to bring different looks to the Seattle running game in addition to a successful short and intermediate passing game. Much of Sean McVay’s attack is about horizontal movement, window dressing, and opening players into space.

These are all traits that would be welcome in Seattle. The big question (and one to which we won’t know the answer until next September) is how Carroll’s ideologies will fit in with Waldron’s and what freedom Waldron will have to implement his own plan.

It’s also to be assumed that Russell Wilson met Waldron and gave his seal of approval on the rental before Seattle finalized the addition.

Hopefully we’ll hear from Waldron in the near future, but now we know the research is over and the Seahawks have their new CO.
