Schumer announces deal to prevent government shutdown

Senatorial Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday evening that an agreement to keep the government funded and prevent a government shutdown was reached.

“We have an agreement on the RC – the resolution continues – to prevent a government shutdown, and we should vote on it tomorrow morning,” he told the Senate. The majority leader said he hoped to hold a vote on final adoption by noon – hours before government funding ran out at midnight Thursday.

The short-term funding bill would keep federal agencies in operation until December 3, but it does not address the impending deadline for raising the debt ceiling to avoid the default of the United States. The bill includes $ 6.3 billion for Afghan refugee resettlement efforts, as well as $ 28.6 billion for disaster assistance following a series of hurricanes and fires of devastating forest.

Once the bill passes in the Senate, the House will consider it, so that it can then be sent to President Biden for him to sign before government funding expires.
